The Asian German Sports Exchange Programme (A.G.S.E.P.) is a Non-Governmental- Organisation (NGO), operating in the development political sector. The Head Office is based in Marawila / Sri Lanka; a partner office is located in Essen / Germany.
History of A.G.S.E.P.
A.G.S.E.P. was founded in 1989, when the current CEO of the programme Dietmar Döring, who was the national coach of the table tennis team of Sri Lanka, decided out of personal experiences with the civil war to use sport events as a medium to encourage the peace process on the island. Since then A.G.S.E.P. acts as an NGO in Sri Lanka, which is now supported by more than one hundred voluntary co-workers, fourteen patrons, several sport associations in Sri Lanka and Germany as well as interns from universities out of Europe. Currently A.G.S.E.P. is working independently from aid money.
Philosophy of the organisation
According to Kotler there are three types of organisations: ones, which actively implement changes; ones, which let changes happen and ones, which are surprised about changes.
The Asian German Sports Exchange Programme holds an active integrating position concerning the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka and through this distinguishes itself from most other companies placed in the tourism-sector. The programme pursues development policy goals and is therefore not designed for an economic gain. A.G.S.E.P.’s main goal is the
transmission of information with the final intention of influencing the opinions, attitudes, behaviour and knowledge of the Sri Lankan people as well as the world public, consequently achieving a positive contribution to the re-establishment of peace in the divided country. With the help of sporting events the organisation aims to help the rivalling ethnic groups to become closer together, give an impulse to peace and spread this message of peace beyond national borders. Like for other NGOs, communication is not only an element of the marketing-mix, but the products and services provided by
A.G.S.E.P. are symbolic and communicative in themselves. The various instruments of promotion are implemented for the popularisation of social values. These can be purposefully modified and their acceptance can be manipulated and altered in society. This influence can be exerted systematically and in a controlled way145. This is A.G.S.E.P.’s main business objective.
A.G.S.E.P. bietet ganzjährlich Praktikumsplätze in den Bereichen Sozialwissenschaften, Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Sportwissenschaften und Pädagogik an.
