The idea for a Sports Science Institute who could develop sport in South Africa was generated by way of extensive interaction between Morne du Plessis (famous Rugby player in South Africa, founfing member of the World Sports Award), Professor Tim Noakes ( a leading international expert in sport sciences from the University of Cape Town) and Johann Rupert - one of the wealthiest men in SA.
The result was the creation of a facility for South Africa that could increase the level of performance of all sports people, encouraging support for the South African sportsmen and women across all cultures and groups.
The construction of a facility in Cape Town, that would provide extensive research and training space for the Bio-energetics of the Exercise Research Unit of the University of Cape Town and the Medical Research Council, headed by Prof. Noakes. This provided a unique opportunity for the application of research with the overall goal of improving performance and health while reducing the risk of injury.
The construction of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa was funded by generous donations made directly to the University of Cape Town, in turn, lent the funds to a Shareblock Company enabling this company to construct the building in Boundery Road, Newlands, Cape Town - directly next to the world famous rugby and cricket fields.
The South African Rugby Association is also involved in the project to get the best treatment for their members. The governing principles of the Sports Science Institute are:

- Ensure that programs and activities are sustainable and shows fiscal responsibility
- Provide teaching and service of highest standard
- Endeavour to be at the forefront of international sports science, research and the provision of related services
- Maintain a responsible relationship with their Service Providers, Commercial partners, donors and tenants.
Their target markets are mainly elite sports people, performance enhancers, fitness and wellness champions as well as rehabilitation of sportsmen and women. In conclusion, their target market are all individuals or teams who use exercise to achieve a desired end.
Furthermore, they offer programs in the scope of social development. The Sport Science Institute created a program so called CHIPs. The target group for this activities are mainly disadvantaged communities in Cape Town. The main goal is to increase exercise participation amongst all ages! Many successful projects excits in and around Cape Town.
