The Students' Health And Welfare Centres, was started in 1943 and is now a well-established community development organisation working under the auspices of the University of Cape Town. Its focus is on youth development, with emphasis on empowering people with knowledge, self-confidence and life-long skills training. The youth projects have all one goal - to provide young people in disadvantage areas, regardless of their race, religious denomination or possible disability, with an education for life, which will lead to economic independence and self-empowerment. The projects include a school curriculum enrichment programme in Khayelitsha and Kensington. In addition, they are in the process of setting up an information resource centre in Khayelithsa, which will be used by teachers and pupils from 10 schools.
SWC is also providing health services to the poorest of the poor. These mobile clinics provide medical care in three informal settlements, as well to street people. The clinics operate in the evenings and nobody is ever turned away, even if this means working until midnight.
