The Deaf Society of Cape Town was founded in 1987 as a non profit governmental welfare organisation, whose aim it is to address the needs of the deaf people in the Western Cape, especially the black and coloured community. The organisation has an active membership of 1090 members from whom general direction is received. The Deaf Society is actively involved in a number of self-help projects, designed to empower deaf people, vocationally and socially. As an organisation with limited funding, they rely mainly on donations and corporate sponsorship.
At Deaf Society you can absolve two different types of internships, one in the field of fundraising and one at the office. For the first skills in fund raising, project co-ordination and proposal writing would be of advantage. Your English should be both proficient in written and spoken form. You would be responsible for liasing with the media, preparing research documents, feasibility studies, writing proposals, and assisting in organising functions and events. To work in the office, you will need good skills in book keeping, financial planning and general office admin. You will be responsible for the day to day operations, as well as instituting new ideas and assisting in general up-coming projects, media consulting and clerical work. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential. In either case you should be an organised, resourceful person, who enjoys a challenge.
