Sisters Incorporated offers peace of mind and security to women and children who need to escape from abusive relationships. It provides the opportunity for victims to recover from the trauma caused by years of hardship and to prepare to cope on their own when they eventually leave the safe house. Sisters Incorporated is a private welfare organisation in Kenilworth which was founded in 1958. It was originally established as a refuge for single pregnant women at a time when tremendous stigma was attached to such a condition. In more recent times when the alarming extent of domestic violence became known they amended their constitution to include the victims of domestic abuse and in 1997/98 they built an annex in the grounds of their Home to enable them to cater for the growing number of abused women and their children who desperately need to escape from abusive relationships. With the advent of legal abortion they accommodate only an occasional pregnancy case and the majority of their residents are now abused women and children of all races and religions. Most of the women in this category are unemployed, they have no financial resources and are therefore unable to contribute in their upkeep, whereas, previously, the families of the young pregnant women were prepared to pay the full accommodation fee for their daughters. Sisters Incorporated is managed by a Council of volunteers and a small but dedicated staff.
Internships in the field of Social Services and psychology can apply and work will be according to work experience and abilities. Counselling is much needed and assistance with more mundane tasks like compilation of CV's for residents, teaching basic hygiene and caring for children with special needs, is required.
