In the early 1780s Jeremy Bentham, a philosopher and English jurist, was the first to assess the rights of animals with any authority. He claimed that if humanity to animals was taught to children it would help prevent crimes of violence in years to come. Jeremy Bentham's England was indeed in need of some reform. Bull-baiting, cock-fighting and organised dog and cat fights regularly took place in front of appro int_auck_spca01ving audiences. Work animals were literally beaten to death by cruel owners. The time was fast approaching when some laws had to be created to protect the animals. Attempts to create law reform came from a courageous MP, Sir William Pultney. In 1800 he put forward a Bill to prevent bull-baiting. In debate, this practice was described as a "cowardly, beastly, execrable practice", and compared unfavourably with the new sport of cricket! The Times newspaper pronounced that any such law which interfered with man's leisure was tyranny and the Bill was lost. In 1824, an Act of Incorporation created the first Animal Protect Group. With the first donation in pounds sterling, the APG proceeded to police the new law to protect the animals. In 1840 the Society was honoured with the prefix "Royal" by Queen Victoria. The new Society quickly grew internationally. In 1839 the Scottish Society was formed and in 1866, the American APG was formed by Henry Bergh, who established laws patterned on the English legislation. In 1882 the Society reached the shores of New Zealand with the establishment of the Otago APG. The first prosecution involving the Society was the ill-treatment of an omnibus horse. Wellington followed in 1884 and by the turn of the century some seven organisations existed in New Zealand. For all, it was no different than those slightly earlier times in England when ridicule seemed to accompany the humanist. The APG strives to achieve the following aims:
-To encourage the humane treatment of all animals and to prevent cruelty which people may inflict on them
-To provide shelter for animals in need of care and attention through the establishment of facilities that will provide for their needs in their best interests, and to promote and ensure suitable long term adoption
-To promote a humane understanding of animals and to influence the way people think about them by education and example
-To gain financial and active support to accomplish these undertakings and to ensure that funds raised are maximised to the overall benefit of the animals
-To assist the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in lobbying for effective legislation to prevent cruelty to animals and to professionally enforce existing laws established for their protection.

At Animal Protect you will work as a volunteer. You will cover the position of animal attendant working with the staff to care for the animals after a period of "#39;shadowing? , observing what the other society members do.
